Clean Air Conditioning Units Ensure Health & Utility Cost Savings!

Updated: May 25

Cleaning your air conditioning (AC) unit is essential to ensure it operates efficiently and lasts longer. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean your AC unit:

Materials Needed

  • Screwdriver

  • Fin comb (optional)

  • Garden hose with a spray nozzle

  • Soft brush or cloth

  • Mild detergent or coil cleaner

  • Vacuum with a soft brush attachment

  • Bucket

  • Protective gloves and eyewear

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Turn Off the Power

  • Ensure the AC unit is completely powered off. Disconnect it from the main power supply to avoid any accidents.

2. Clean or Replace the Filters

  • Indoor Unit: Remove the front panel to access the filters. Clean them with warm water and mild detergent. Let them dry completely before reinserting them. If the filters are damaged or extremely dirty, replace them.

  • Outdoor Unit: Some outdoor units may also have filters. Check the manufacturer’s guide for details.

3. Clean the Evaporator Coils (Indoor Unit)

  • Remove the access panel to expose the evaporator coils.

  • Use a soft brush or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris.

  • If the coils are particularly dirty, apply a coil cleaner following the manufacturer’s instructions. Let it sit for a few minutes, then gently rinse with water.

4. Clean the Condenser Coils (Outdoor Unit)

  • Remove any debris (leaves, dirt, etc.) around the unit.

  • Unscrew and remove the protective grille to access the condenser coils.

  • Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to gently rinse the coils from the inside out. Avoid using a pressure washer, as it can damage the fins.

  • If necessary, apply a coil cleaner and rinse thoroughly.

5. Straighten the Coil Fins

  • Bent fins can reduce airflow. Use a fin comb to straighten any bent fins on the evaporator and condenser coils.

6. Clean the Drain Pan and Drain Line (Indoor Unit)

  • Locate the drain pan under the evaporator coils and clean it with soap and water.

  • Ensure the drain line is not clogged. Use a vacuum or a plumber’s snake to clear any blockages.

7. Clean the Fan Blades

  • Indoor Unit: Carefully clean the fan blades with a damp cloth.

  • Outdoor Unit: Remove the top cover to access the fan blades. Clean them with a damp cloth, being careful not to bend them.

8. Reassemble the Unit

  • Once all parts are clean and dry, reassemble the unit by replacing the covers and screws.

9. Restore Power and Test the Unit

  • Reconnect the unit to the power supply.

  • Turn on the AC unit and check if it is operating properly.

Tips

  • Regularly clean or replace the air filters every 1-3 months.

  • Schedule a professional maintenance check at least once a year.

  • Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear of debris to maintain airflow.

Following these steps will help keep your AC unit running efficiently and extend its lifespan. If you're not comfortable performing these tasks yourself, consider hiring a professional HVAC technician.
